CHAPEL HILL – Children in nine central North Carolina counties will explore science firsthand this summer through a unique GlaxoSmithKline enrichment program hosted by local libraries and other community sites.

GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer enrichment program is available at sites in Alamance, Caswell, Chatham, Durham, Franklin, Harnett, Johnston, Orange and Wake counties. UNC’s Morehead Planetarium and Science Center administers Science in the Summer in North Carolina.

Certified teachers lead Science in the Summer activities at each site. As part of this year’s theme, “Water and Our Oceans,” students will learn about ecosystem health and function, aquatic habitats and the water cycle. They will also explore the ways humans impact aquatic systems.

Science in the Summer sites will offer classes at three levels. Level I, for students entering grades 2 and 3, will meet daily (9 a.m. to 12 p.m.). Level II, for students entering grades 4 and 5, will also meet daily (1 to 4 p.m.) Level III, for students entering grades 6, 7 and 8, will meet two days during the week (9 a.m. to 12 p.m.) and perform science activities aboard a mobile science laboratory, part of Morehead’s DESTINY Traveling Science Learning Program.

Participation is free, but space is limited. Parents must register their children through the online registration system on Morehead’s Web site (from the Morehead Web site, <www.moreheadplanetarium.org>, choose the “Outreach” tab at the top and go to the “SIS” link). Classes fill on a first-come, first-serve basis. The Web site includes a full list of sites and dates as well as registration information. GlaxoSmithKline has funded Science in the Summer through 2011 with a $723,000 grant to Morehead Planetarium and Science Center.

The middle school sessions will give students laboratory experience on board a traveling science laboratory from Morehead Planetarium and Science Center’s Destiny traveling science learning program. The laboratory is one of two 40-foot buses that bring the latest science and technology equipment to students in North Carolina.

GlaxoSmithKline — one of the world's leading research-based pharmaceutical and healthcare companies — is committed to improving the quality of human life by enabling people to do more, feel better and live longer.
