Who:
Philadelphia students entering second through sixth grade will attend GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer program, a free and fun experiment-oriented course taught by certified teachers to groups of 15 students in two age groups:  children entering second and third grades (Level I) and children entering fourth through sixth grades (Level II).  GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer is sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and administered by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in partnership with local libraries.

What:
GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer program will teach Philadelphia students about chemistry in a course designed to intrigue and excite through hands-on experiments. Students will learn what “matter” is and why it is not always the same.  They will make crystals and perform experiments with litmus paper to discover if substances are acids or bases. They also will turn pennies into gold and make balloons fly.

In Philadelphia, GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer program consists of four 45-minute classes given over the course of a week and special one- and two-day sessions, where noted.  For the four-day classes, morning sessions are: (Level I: 10 - 10:45 a.m., Level II: 11:15 a.m. - Noon) and afternoon sessions are:  (Level I: 2:00 - 2:45 p.m., Level II: 3:15 - 4:00 p.m.).  Call your local library (phone numbers listed below) for times for the special one-day and two-day sessions. Saturday sessions will be held at the Lucien E. Blackwell Regional Library and Joseph E. Coleman Northwest Regional Library.

GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer fosters a life-long appreciation of learning through hands-on experiments that open young minds to the wonderful world of science. Since its inception 22 years ago, 91,000 Philadelphia-area children have participated in the program.
