Who:
Delaware County students entering second through sixth grade are invited to register and attend GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer program, a free and fun experiment-oriented course taught by certified teachers to groups of 15 students in two age groups: children entering second and third grades (Level I) and children entering fourth through sixth grades (Level II).  GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer is sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and administered by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in partnership with local libraries.

What:
GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer program will teach Delaware County students about Bioscience in a class designed to intrigue and excite through hands-on experiments. Students will explore the world of one-celled and many-celled living things using microscopes and magnifying glasses.  They will examine plant and animal cells and discover how they are similar and different; make their own slides to observe microscopic animals, onion cells, and aquatic herbs; and dissect a flower. Students will learn about bacteria and find out why some bacteria are helpful and others are harmful.

GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer program consists of four 45-minute classes given over the course of a week. Sessions are offered in the morning (Level I: 10 - 10:45 a.m., Level II: 11:00 a.m. - 11:45 a.m.) and in the afternoon (Level I: 2:00 - 2:45 p.m., Level II: 3:00 - 3:45 p.m.). Special two-day sessions will be held at the Collingdale Public Library and at the J. Lewis Crozer Library.  See below for specific registration and course dates. Parents must register their child in person at the library they wish to attend.

GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer fosters a life-long appreciation of learning through hands-on experiments that open young minds to the wonderful world of science. Since its inception 22 years ago, 91,000 Philadelphia-area children have participated in the program.
