Bucks County Libraries/Science in the Summer

Bucks County Elementary School Students Are Invited to
Discover the World of Simple Machines during
GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer
Registration Begins in May – Space is Limited

Who:
Bucks County students entering second through sixth grade are invited to register and attend GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer program, a free and fun experiment-oriented course taught by certified teachers to groups of 15 students in two age groups: children entering second and third grades (Level I) and children entering fourth through sixth grades (Level II). GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer is sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and administered by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in partnership with local libraries.

What:
During GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer, Bucks County students will explore the exciting world of simple machines in a class designed to intrigue and excite through hands-on experiments. Students will learn how machines lift huge boulders, build bridges and pump water.  They also will use the six basic kinds of machines: lever, inclined plane, screw, wheel, pulley and gear and build a simple roller coaster.

In Bucks County, GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer program consists of four 45-minute classes given over the course of a week. Sessions are offered in the morning (Level I: 10 - 10:45 a.m., Level II: 11:15 a.m. – Noon) and in the afternoon (Level I: 1:00 - 1:45 p.m., Level II: 2:15 - 3:00 p.m.). To register, parents must come in person to the library branch they wish their child to attend. Students are selected to participate either through a lottery or on a first come basis.  Please contact the library for more information.  See below for registration and course dates, times and library phone numbers.

Why:
GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer fosters a life-long appreciation of learning through hands-on experiments that open young minds to the wonderful world of science. Since its inception 22 years ago, 91,000 Philadelphia-area children have participated in the program.
