Who:
Montgomery County students entering second through sixth grade are invited to register and attend GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer program, a free and fun experiment-oriented course taught by certified teachers to groups of 15 students in two age groups: children entering second and third grades (Level I) and children entering fourth through sixth grades (Level II). GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer is sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and administered by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in partnership with local libraries.

What:
GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer program will teach Montgomery County students about genetics in a class designed to intrigue and excite through hands-on experiments. Students will build a cell to learn more about chromosomes and genes, extract DNA from a strawberry, examine their fingerprints, and build a model of a DNA molecule.

Sessions are offered in the morning (Level I: 10 - 10:45 a.m., Level II: 11:15 a.m. - noon) and in the afternoon (Level I: 2:00 - 2:45 p.m., Level II: 3:15 - 4:00 p.m.). All children must be pre-registered to attend. To register, parents must come in person to the library branch they wish their child to attend. GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer fosters a life-long appreciation of learning through hands-on experiments that open young minds to the wonderful world of science. Since its inception 22 years ago, 91,000 Philadelphia-area children have participated in the program.
