Montgomery County Libraries to Become Bioscience Labs for
Elementary School Students during GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer

Registration Begins in April – Space is Limited

Who:
Montgomery County students entering second through sixth grade will attend GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer program, a free and fun experiment-oriented course taught by certified teachers to groups of 15 students in two age groups:  children entering second and third grades (Level I) and children entering fourth through sixth grades (Level II).  GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer is sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and administered by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in partnership with local libraries.

What:
GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer program will teach Montgomery County students about Bioscience in a course designed to intrigue and excite through hands-on experiments. Students will study one-celled and many-celled living things using microscopes and magnifying glasses. The young scientists will examine plant and animal cells and discover how they are similar and different; make their own slides to observe microscopic animals, onion cells, and aquatic herbs; and dissect a flower. In addition, students will learn about bacteria and find out why some bacteria are helpful and others are harmful.

Sessions are offered in the morning (Level I: 10 - 10:45 a.m., Level II: 11:15 a.m. - noon) and in the afternoon (Level I: 2:00 - 2:45 p.m., Level II: 3:15 - 4:00 p.m.).  Special two-day and Saturday sessions are available at select branches. All children must be pre-registered to attend. To register, parents must come in person to the library branch they wish their child to attend. GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer opens young minds to the world of science and fosters a life-long appreciation of learning.  This year’s class will mark over 100,000 students from the Greater Philadelphia region who will have participated in GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer since its inception 24 years ago.
