Montgomery County Libraries to Become Physical Science Labs for
Elementary School Students during the 25th Anniversary of
GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer

Registration Begins in April – Space is Limited

Who:
Montgomery County students entering second through sixth grade will attend GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer program, a free and fun experiment-oriented course taught by certified teachers to groups of 15 students in two age groups: children entering second and third grades (Level I) and children entering fourth through sixth grades (Level II).  GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer is sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and administered by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in partnership with local libraries.

What:
GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer program will teach Montgomery County students about Physical Science and Electricity, answering questions such as “How do magnets work?”, “What is a magnetic force field?”, and “What makes electricity?”. Students will make a compass, an electromagnet and use an electrostatic generator. This course teaches about magnetism, static electricity, electrical currents and circuits. Discover why it’s a hair-raising experience!

Sessions are offered in the morning (Level I: 10 - 10:45 a.m., Level II: 11:15 a.m. - noon) and in the afternoon (Level I: 2:00 - 2:45 p.m., Level II: 3:15 - 4:00 p.m.). Special two-day and Saturday sessions are available at select branches. Sessions on Saturday are Level I: 10 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. and Level II: 12:30 p.m. – 2:15 p.m. All children must be pre-registered to attend. Over 100,000 students from the Greater Philadelphia region have participated in GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer since its inception.
