Who:
Bucks County students entering second through sixth grade are invited to register and attend GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer program, a free and fun experiment-oriented course taught by certified teachers to groups of 15 students in two age groups: children entering second and third grades (Level I) and children entering fourth through sixth grades (Level II). GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer is sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and administered by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in partnership with local libraries.
What:
GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer program will introduce Bucks County students to the exciting world of Chemistry. Through hands-on experiments, young chemists will learn what matter is and that it is not always the same. They will observe physical and chemical changes with fun experiments like turning pennies into gold, making crystals, and watching raisins and popcorn “dance.” Students also will decide if substances are acids, bases, or neutrals by using litmus and pH papers and a universal indicator.
In Bucks County, GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer program consists of four 45-minute classes given over the course of a week. Sessions are offered in the morning (Level I: 10 - 10:45 a.m., Level II: 11:15 a.m. – Noon) and in the afternoon (Level I: 1:00 - 1:45 p.m., Level II: 2:15 - 3:00 p.m.). To register, parents must come in person to the library they wish their child to attend. Students are selected to participate either through a lottery or on a first-come basis. Please contact the library for more information. See below for registration and course dates, times and library phone numbers.
Why:
Celebrating its 25th anniversary, GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer opens young minds to the world of science and fosters a life-long appreciation of learning. Over 100,000 students from the Delaware Valley have participated in GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer since its inception.
